Chapter 22

Haven Vine

Isadora’s wound was healed after a little more TLC was given. It was a strange sight to see after the last time I saw her when she was trying to kill all of us and we wanted her dead. Now, here I was, helping save her from her eternal damnation that was truly well deserved. She laid sleeping on the couch under the souls as Callum sat beside her with Jaxon next to him. Jaxon’s fists had been clenched since the moment he heard about his mom and rightfully so. It was as if the universe did not want all of us together ever again. I knew Jaxon was only here, instead of on a revenge mission to save his mom, to make sure that his dad stayed safe.

Callum hadn’t said a word, but instead sat next to Isadora, waiting for her to open her eyes to see what she knew about Margo’s whereabouts. And of course, we all wanted to know if she knew Ragnar’s next move.

I stood and walked to the kitchen to wash my hands. I tried scrubbing the blood from my palms and scraping under my fingernails as best as I could, but it seemed that there would always be blood where I didn’t want it. I felt as if a part of me was born to be a healer, to save people, but I also didn’t want to be the one to play with lifelines that were not mine to choose. Everyone had their own path, and it definitely was not my job to save the villain. But again, who got to choose who the villains were? Versus the heroes? I closed my eyes and let the water run, trying to wash away the problems of today. Our other world was so quiet, and a part of me for a moment missed the silence, but then I thought of Ezra, and my heart leaped. I missed him. I jumped as a hand grazed my back, and I quickly turned around with bubbles up to my arms splashing onto the floor and across the man’s chest as he stood in front of me.

“Haven.” Ezra’s voice cracked.

I stood in shock as tears spilled down my cheeks. I had been waiting too long to see him again and planning this very moment in my head for months. I had imagined meeting him along the river at sunset or in the pottery shop with Aunt Clara or even sitting at my dad’s house, sipping coffee with my mom and sister with a map laid across the table, another plan to get us back. But instead, as soon as we arrived back home, he was away with Aisling and Declan. Then of course, we ended up with a phone call at JFK to get back to Jaxon’s house as soon as possible and all of my plans disappeared. I was thrown into trying to save our enemy… or frenemy? I didn’t know where to put her yet.

“Ezra.” My soapy arms flew around his neck as I jumped into his arms.
